Meet our Team is an ongoing blog series that features Bow Valley College faculty and staff.
Stacey Busse has been a faculty member for eight years and is an instructor in the Corporate Readiness Training Program and also works on projects and curriculum development. A typical day sees her in the classroom, teaching job finding and job maintenance skills to CRTP learners, as well as facilitating discussions around workplace culture, resumes, and interview skills. Stacey has edited hundreds of learner resumes since she started working in her role. Stacey was the recipient of this year's Faculty Award of Excellence - a peer nominated award acknowledging outstanding performance.
What do you like most about your job?
I love, love, love working with our clients. All of our CRTP students are so invested in the course and they are highly motivated to succeed. We often have students come back once they have found work, and it’s very rewarding for me to see them happily employed and filled with new confidence.
What’s one thing that you’ve learned since working here?
Ask questions. New opportunities can show up if you ask the right questions. Most problems can be easily resolved if you ask the right questions. Most importantly, you’ll understand your learners better and deliver what they need if you ask the right questions.
What do you value most about your colleagues?
They are wonderful in so many ways. They are so committed to helping our students. They are resourceful, intelligent, and have a great sense of humor.
Who is an educator that has impacted your life?
Professor Barret taught me my first anthropology course. It opened up my world in a very wonderful and adventurous way. His class was fascinating. I learned about different cultures, and different ways of living in different parts of the world. He introduced me to Indiana Jones and inspired me to travel. I might not have become Indiana Jones, but I’m pretty sure that in recent years I’ve edited his resume.
What are three traits that are important in your role?
- Being analytical: You need to be able to assess the class and deliver the appropriate content in a meaningful way.
- Being creative: Try new approaches and communicate in different ways so that your message is more likely to be heard and enjoyed. Teach to the class.
- Being direct but kind: People don’t know what they don’t know. If part of your role is preparing people to navigate in a different culture, they need know how their actions will be received (good or bad).

Can you describe an aha moment you have experienced in your role?
I was having a difficult time delivering a sensitive message to a student. Feeling a little anxious, I went to see Laurel Madro, the CRTP Program Coordinator. She gave me the best advice ever. She said, “Stick to the observable facts, be clear on consequences, and go into the conversation with the best of intentions. It will all work out.” This advice has never failed me.
What do you want to learn this year?
I want to know how to become a D2L Ninja. Maybe I’ll blog about it.

Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin.
