ELL E-textbooks as Open Educational Resources

  • ELL E-textbooks as Open Educational Resources

The following blog post was written by Veena Zarour-Murthy, a faculty member at the Centre for Excellence in Immigrant and Intercultural Advancement.

Bow Valley College and NorQuest College have collaborated to create two open educational resources (OER) for English language learners. An OER has an open license. It can be legally copied, shared and adapted. Best of all, it is free.

With funding from Alberta Open Educational Resources, this innovative partnership project produced two e-textbooks for adult immigrant learners who require English language instruction:

These e-textbooks were developed to provide access to quality ELL material without the material cost to learners and institutions offering ELL programming in Alberta. They can be used online with interactive activities, or downloaded and printed to use as regular textbooks.

In the Workplace and In the Community are aimed at CLB Levels 5 to 6.  The e-textbooks are divided into five chapters each and include video and audio. The e-textbooks offer rich content for practicing all the four language skills and for developing intercultural communicative competence. Both e-textbooks have instructor guides.
