ELL Training Network

  • ELL Training Network

The Centre for Excellence in Immigrant and Intercultural Advancement (CEIIA) has recently launched the ELL Training Network. The online network, located on the CEIIA website, is a place for ELL practitioners to access professional development workshops, webinars, resources, and information to better meet the needs of English language learners.

In response to the needs of the Calgary ELL community, the ELL Training Network will initially focus on supporting instructors working with English language learners who are refugees.

The CEIIA is leading a two year project, funded by Calgary Learns, to create professional development workshops to strengthen the teaching skills of ELL practitioners working with adult refugee learners. The project includes an advisory committee with representatives from: Bow Valley College, Calgary Immigrant Women's Association, Calgary Catholic Immigration Society, Calgary Immigrant Education Society, Centre for Newcomers, and Immigrant Services Calgary.

Over the next two years, ELL practitioners will have the opportunity to participate in six face-to-face workshops. The workshops will provide information, strategies, and inclusive instructional practices to better support refugee learners in the ELL classroom. Each workshop will be offered as a condensed one-hour webinar to increase accessibility to this professional learning opportunity.

The first three face-to-face workshops offered this spring include:

  • The Arrival Experiences of Refugee Learners
  • The Influence of Trauma in the Classroom
  • Strategies for Teaching Refugees
