The following blog post was written by Shelley McConnell, a faculty member at the Centre for Excellence in Immigrant and Intercultural Advancement.

With many of us sharing Canadian Thanksgiving traditions with our learners in October, I wanted to share a beautiful seasonal story about one of our learners from Syria.

Mohamed was a farmer in Syria but had been unable to farm for the past five years due to the civil war. After living through many ordeals in Syria and then Lebanon, he arrived in Canada in early June with his wife and three small children. By mid-June, he had planted his first garden in Canada and produced enough fresh vegetables to feed his family and a remarkable number of other refugee families.

Mohamed's story embodies the spirit of Thanksgiving and has reached local news outlets. This week, his story was published in the Metro newspaper and televised on Global News Calgary.  As you head into the holiday weekend, I hope you will share this inspiring story with your learners and let them know their presence in our communities is truly a gift.
