Meet our Team: Roy Wilkinson

  • Meet our Team: Roy Wilkinson

Meet our Team is an ongoing blog series that features Bow Valley College faculty and staff.

Roy Wilkinson has been an instructor at Bow Valley College since 1989. During his tenure at the College, he has taught in programs such as LINC and International.  Roy has taught all levels in all streams but has spent most of his time teaching intermediate level learners.  One of the things that Roy was known for was creating an international cookbook every term with his learners.  He is lucky to have had two full, rewarding careers and has had fun doing both of them – his plan is to go forward in another direction.

On August 14, 2015, Roy retired from Bow Valley College amidst trumpets, guitars and a fully outfitted mariachi band. His contributions to the Centre are vast and his commitment to learners and providing a safe and fun learning environment is exemplary. To capture a snapshot of his time at the College, we asked Roy to share some insights about his career.

What do you like most about your job?

How every day is new and unpredictable; ours is a job that does not allow complacency.  I have always tried to ensure that the classroom is a safe place that fosters respect, and where learners can have fun and learn from their mistakes.

What’s one thing that you have learned since working here?

That I will likely learn something new almost every day.  For all our differences in culture, ethnicity and language we all have very similar dreams and goals for ourselves and our children.

What do you value most in your colleagues?

Their truly sincere sense of caring for and about the learners.

Who is an educator that has impacted your work?

Susan Findlay, who first taught me to teach and to recognize that teaching well is a craft, not a job.  We teach people and not just subjects.

What are three traits that are important to your role?

Humour, compassion, and integrity.

What (who) is your favourite go-to resource?

Cameron Young, a very wise individual, who once told me I know just enough about computers to be dangerous.

Can you describe a memorable moment in your career?

When I was recognized and given credit for providing the name of the college.

Name one thing about yourself that people don’t know.

I have been a commissioned artist in a past life.

What advice would you offer to new faculty members in the Centre?

Don’t hesitate to ask for help, or give it when you are asked.

What do you look forward to in your retirement?

Catching up on all things I stopped doing before because I couldn’t seem to find the time…

Roy commented that wine and sausage making are at the top of his ‘to do’ list – sounds like a party in the making. We wish you well in retirement – Congratulations.
