Gamification in education is a hot topic right now. One of the more interesting applications of this concept is Spell Up created by Google.
Available only for Chrome, Android and iOS, Spell Up is a game where you collect points and move up levels by correctly spelling words by speaking the letters into your computer microphone. The words stack up at the bottom of your screen and the goal is to build your tower as high as you can. As the game progresses, the difficulty increases. The words are more challenging and the answer format changes so you may have to fill in missing letters, unscramble a word, or pronounce a word after spelling it. This variety keeps the game interesting. Spelling words correctly earns you coins which you can spend on different power-ups that can give you hints or spell a complete word for you.
Spell Up is a great and fun way to improve spelling and vocabulary so give it a try on your own or with your learners.
