TESOL 2015 Conference

  • TESOL 2015 Conference

The following blog post was written by Diane Hardy and Hana Taleb Imai, Coordinators of Innovation & Research at the Centre for Excellence in Immigrant and Intercultural Advancement.

From March 24 – March 28, over 6000 TESL professionals from around the world gathered for the 2015 TESOL Conference, Crossing Boarders, Building Bridges in Toronto, Ontario.

A new, highly successful feature of the conference was a full-day symposium focused on Adult Education at which we were invited to share Centre expertise. Jim Cummins was the keynote speaker, and esteemed colleagues from across Canada shared their knowledge about a breadth of topics within five streams: Program Administration, Innovations in Practice, Standards in Adult Education, Assessment of Learning and Removing Barriers to Success. We were pleased to co-facilitate a presentation called Best Practices in ESL Programming Through the Lens of Administration. Highlighting an Appreciative Inquiry strengths-based approach, we identified seven promising tactics for generative program administration and showcased examples of how we have implemented these ideas:

  • Manage change (flexibility/agility)
  • Build collaborative teams and partnerships (collaboration)
  • Consider needs of 21st century teaching and learning (innovation)
  • Engage stakeholders (accountability)
  • Accommodate intercultural differences (inclusiveness)
  • Repurpose resources (sustainability/resiliency)
  • Increase virtual presence (accessibility)

Our thanks to Sharon Rajabi and Bita Bookman for organizing the Adult Education Day. It was an engaging and informative day, and we hope to see this event included at future TESOL conferences.

This year’s TESOL Conference was a valuable learning and networking opportunity. We attended many informative sessions and gained newfound knowledge from our peers. We wrapped up the conference by facilitating a poster session which explored the multitude of ways in which the Centre is building intercultural competence across our College community and strengthening the Diversity Advantage at Bow Valley College.

Make sure to check out the Intercultural Centre's event calendar to participate in upcoming events around campus.
