ICan Crew: Fall Update

  • ICan Crew: Fall Update

The following blog post was written by Kelty Christensen, Learner Engagement Officer at the Centre for Excellence in Immigrant and Intercultural Advancement. The ICan Crew is an Intercultural Centre initiative that engages learners in volunteering both on campus and in the larger Calgary community.

This fall the ICan Crew has been kept busy in their involvement in campus activities and in the community.

October marked the start of the United Way fundraising campaign at Bow Valley College. ICan crew volunteers supported this initiative by supporting both the book sale and the Jail and Bail event held on campus. As in previous years, the United Way fundraising campaign was a success and according to one volunteer, “Jail and Bail was sooooo much fun.....!”

On October 19, the Intercultural Centre hosted the fourth annual ELL Settlement and Resource Fair. At this event, more than 300 English language learners attended presentations by members from the Calgary community. The ICan Crew helped to ensure the fair ran smoothly. 15 learners from the MC in the IC program, introduced presenters and numerous volunteers ensured that attendees arrived at their designated presentations.

One volunteer remarked, “I was so scared to introduce Judge Joe, but then I did it and now I want to do it again! I am so excited and proud of myself right now!”

My goal is to become a chef and this is a great way to volunteer and do something that I love.

A few short days later, ICan Crew members volunteered at Brown Bagging for Calgary Kids (BB4CK), an organization that feeds over 1500 children a day in Calgary schools. ICan Crew volunteers donned aprons and hair nets and baked cookies, squares, muffins, and whipped up healthy snacks. One volunteer who plans to continue volunteering with BB4CK said, “I loved doing this! My goal is to become a chef and this is a great way to volunteer and do something that I love.” The staff at BB4CK was amazing and entertained our group with inspiring stories about how children have benefited from the support of this organization.

What is coming up next?  The ICan Crew will be volunteering at the Calgary Food Bank on November 24, 2016.  For more information, contact
