The ICan Crew goes green

  • The ICan Crew goes green

The ICan Crew is an Intercultural Centre initiative that engages Bow Valley College learners in volunteering both on campus and in the greater Calgary community.

Every June, Green Calgary hosts their annual rain barrel and compost fundraiser.  Green Calgary encourages Calgarians to choose green options which help to reduce the toxins put in the local waterways as well as reduce household waste.

This year, the ICan Crew was excited to play a role in supporting one of their weekend events.  ICan Crew volunteers worked hard to promote living a “green” life.  Volunteers were also fortunate to receive a green education of their own.  They learned about the uses of rain barrels, and they were taught how to build an effective rain collection system as well as how to compost.

ICan Crew volunteers took away a newfound appreciation for what it means to be green and to take part in a community initiative.  When asked about her experience volunteering with Green Calgary, one volunteer remarked, “We are all responsibility for the environment.  Small contributions add up to making big changes.  It is important to education our community on what each of us can do.  I’m happy that I did my part today!”

The ICan Crew is looking forward to a busy summer of volunteering. If you wonder what is coming up next, the ICan Crew will be volunteering at the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store on July 27, 2017.
