  • Meet our Team: Reika Hamilton

Meet our Team is an ongoing blog series that features Bow Valley College faculty and staff.

Reika Hamilton has worked at the Intercultural Centre (IC) since it opened its doors three years ago. If you ever visit the IC, she is probably one of the first faces that you'll see. Part of her job involves greeting and welcoming visitors, as well as providing administrative support to the IC team. Reika helps to support large-scale IC events and workshops and also ensures that all the IC marketing material is distributed throughout the College.

What do you like most about your job?

I love that I interact with many different people and am a representative of the College. I get to be involved in many fun activities through the IC workshops...and taste great food like waffles, bread, and coffee while learning about local businesses.

What’s one thing that you’ve learned since working here?

It is difficult to pick just one since I’ve learned lots of things. I would say that I have really got to work on my people skills and how to interact with people from all over the world.

What do you value most about your colleagues?

This is the best team I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I appreciate their willingness to help.

Who is an educator that has impacted your life?

I have had some great teachers throughout my ELL experience. They motivated me to work harder and to try to achieve my goals, which is part of the reason I am working here today.

What are three traits that are important in your role?

  • Attention to detail: I must be accurate and precise.
  • Attitude: I can sometimes be the face of the IC so I must be pleasant, positive, and professional.
  • Ability to multi-task: I am often involved in different tasks at the same time and need to organize my priorities and work flow.

What is your favourite go-to resource?

Google Sensei (Sensei means teacher in Japanese)

Can you describe an aha moment you have experienced in your role?

I think I have had many of those while watching my co-workers. I am constantly learning from them, for example how they interact with others, public speaking, etc.

What do you want to learn this year?

I am always looking for ways to improve my skills, such as English.

Name one thing about yourself that most people don’t know.

I lived in New Zealand for one year and studied English there. This inspired me to travel and eventually move to Canada.
