Stampede Spirit and the ICan Crew

  • Stampede Spirit and the ICan Crew

July marks the start of the Calgary Stampede, and the ICan Crew did their part to contribute to the festivities.

The Intercultural Centre hosted a number of events to engage Bow Valley College learners with the Stampede. We hosted presentations by Rob Lenard, the History Wrangler, and Christine Lappard, a Stampede Historian. We also volunteered at Stampede events that took place at the College.

This year, on July 7, ICan Crew volunteers were on hand to support the College's Stampede brunch on Parade Day. Volunteers helped out at face painting and craft stations set up for the children of College employees. Outside, volunteers braved hot the weather to keep 300 parade attendees engaged and hydrated.

According to Boby, an ICanCrew volunteer, “I can have fun anywhere, but parade day everyone seemed so happy and active and that influenced everyone. It made me feel like a part of this city and life here, and that I belonged. I’m not an outsider! “

Following the success of the Parade day, ICan Crew hosted a learner led Stampede line dancing event. ICan crew taught BVC learners the Cadillac Ranch and the Cowboy Hustle line dances. In no time learners were dancing like professionals, laughing and letting out a few Ya-Hoos!

Learners were also encouraged to munch on free popcorn and take a selfie at the Stampede Selfie station. In addition, ten lucky learners won admission tickets to the Stampede grounds through the Stampede draw.

Stay tuned to hear about more ICan Crew events! Next up, the ICan Crew is volunteering at the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. For information on how to become part of the ICan Crew, contact
