Meet our Team is an ongoing blog series that features Bow Valley College faculty and staff. 

Nicole Guyett is the Centre Administrative Assistant and the Assistant to the Dean. Nicole describes her role as very dynamic and demanding. 

As the main scheduling facilitator she is responsible for scheduling over 140 classes within the department. She is the CEIIA's Awards Coordinator and also works on a federal project called Planning for Canada which provides new immigrants with the information they require to make a successful transition into Canada. 
What do you like most about your job?
I like working with the program coordinators and administration staff the most. I love our team and how well we work together. We have such a cohesive working environment and it makes me love coming to work.

What’s one thing that you’ve learned since working here?
Bow Valley College’s growth, even in the four years that I have been here, has been tremendous. The amount of change that happens due to this has been phenomenal. I have learned to embrace and love change as this encourages growth. My position is never the same term in and term out; this makes for excitement in my job and I love it!

What do you value most about your colleagues?
I value my colleagues because we all seem to understand each other so well. We are always there to lend a hand if one needs it. We are all very busy, but there is a notion of pride in our department. We want to contribute to make everything go smoothly every term for our learners.

Who is an educator that has impacted your life?
My grade seven teacher made a big difference in my life.  Up until that grade, I was an under-achiever. Mr. Anderson was very passionate about his students, and he encouraged everyone to break out of their shell and be more. That year, I excelled in most of my courses.

What are three traits that are important in your role?
To accomplish the amount of work related to this role one needs to be highly organized, have a good grasp of time management, and be technologically savvy. 

Another valuable asset is not to be afraid to ask questions and investigate. I have been jokingly called the “All Knowing” of our department by my fellow Admin Support team because I am the one everyone goes to for some technical assistance and questions. If I don’t know the answer, I investigate and find out who can answer the question.

What is your favourite go-to resource?
At home, I use the internet exclusively. At work, while I do use the Internet, I go to myCampus a fair bit.

Can you describe an aha moment you have experienced in your role?
I had an aha moment in my previous job that has kept me positive and always striving to move forward. It was a sudden realization that “everything always works out in the end”. I stress very little now over timelines (and they are in abundance in my role) because I know at the end of the day, I always make it work.

What is your favourite book?
I have way too many!  Most of my favourite books are high adventure fiction that take me directly into the world of the storyteller. I get so entrapped by stories that it’s agonizing to pull away.

Name one thing about yourself that most people don’t know.
I have written a few young adult novels and I am in the process of deciding whether I should publish them.
