    ACE TESOL Certificate

    Obtain the qualifications to teach English in Canada or abroad.

    The ACE TESOL Certificate course is specifically designed to provide participants with the tools, strategies, skills, and knowledge to be successful at teaching adults in English language programs either in Canada or abroad. It is recognized by TESL Canada for TESL Canada Professional Certification Standard One.

    The program provides a strong focus on practical teaching skills and bases its coursework upon the most current teaching theory and methodologies and includes a practicum component. Course participants will improve communication and presentation skills and will increase self-confidence in their teaching abilities.

    Course Information

    The ACE TESOL Certificate program gives you practical, hands-on experience. You'll apply and develop the teaching techniques taught in the classwork through in-class teaching demonstrations, extensive feedback and an on-site practicum. This program prepares you for a career as an English Language Learning (ELL) instructor abroad or right here in Calgary.

    The ACE TESOL Certificate Program is recognized by TESL Canada and can lead to the Standard One Interim certification.

    Requirements

    Applicants must have a university degree and must also provide evidence of English language proficiency through one of the following: 

    • iBT - overall 101 with a minimum of 23 in Listening, 24 in Reading, 27 in Speaking, and 27 in Writing
    • IELTS Academic - 7 overall with a minimum score of 7 in each skill area
    • Graduation from a high school in Canada, including minimum English Grade 12 score of 70%
    • Completion of an undergraduate degree from a university where English is the language of instruction and administration

    The Intercultural Competencies for Leaders Certificate Program is essential for anyone working in a diverse workplace. It helps develop a global perspective and mindset and offers useful tools to build intercultural sensitivity and enhance intercultural communication skills.

    Indigenous Awareness: Engaging Diversity and Inclusion

    Learn about Indigenous histories and contemporary realities in Canada

    This includes relationships to the land, identities, and cultural knowledge. Explore cultural differences and basic Indigenous ways of knowing and being while examining your own worldview with a goal to promote understanding and foster inclusivity.

    This is the fourth course in the Intercultural Competencies for Leaders Certificate(non-credit).

    The course is 100% online and has a peer-learning focus. Course completion is based on active participation on discussion board forums, and the submission of a final assignment which will consolidate participants’ personal experience during this course. The time commitment is typically twelve hours.

    The Post-TESL Certificate Program is an online professional development opportunity for ELL practitioners. It addresses a need for targeted, in-depth post-TESL professional development for ELL practitioners who are working with newcomers. Six fully online courses are offered in the program.

    Professional Learning

    The Post-TESL Certificate Program focuses on enhancing the instructional skills of ELL practitioners who have completed their TESL training and are working in the field of ELL. Each four-week course is fully online, facilitated by subject matter experts, and provides the opportunity to connect with other practitioners in the field. Course content is designed to increase instructor knowledge and encourage practical application in the ELL classroom.​

    The Post-TESL Certificate Program focuses on enhancing the instructional skills of ELL practitioners who have completed their TESL training and are working in the field of ELL.     The School of Global Access is offering a series of post-TESL professional development courses. Each post-TESL course is designed to deepen subject matter knowledge, enhance instructional skills, and encourage connection amongst ELL practitioners. Each four-week course is:

    • Cohort-based and fully online
    • Delivered asynchronously
    • Facilitated by subject matter experts
    • Applicable to a variety of contexts, including LINC
    • Designed for ELL practitioners who have completed TESL training or are working in an ELL environment

    Participants who complete four post-TESL courses will receive a post-TESL certificate.

    This course will support you to create effective learning materials for ESL literacy learners. You will explore principles of effective material design, engage with hands-on and text-based materials, and apply what you have learned to create learning material.

    Strategies for Teaching Refugees

    This course will introduce you to ten strategies for effectively meeting the needs of refugee learners and creating inclusive classrooms for all. You will examine the impact of trauma on learning and identify strategies for creating a safe physical learning environment.

    Teaching in Multilevel Contexts

    This course will introduce you to highly practical strategies and approaches for differentiating and scaffolding reading and writing tasks for learners at different language proficiency levels.

    Inclusive Teaching Practices

    This course will introduce you to inclusive teaching practices to better meet the needs of English language learners. You will examine concepts and strategies that help create inclusive learning and teaching environments.

    Teaching English for the Workplace

    This course will introduce you to considerations in the selection of materials, key teaching points, and methods of instructional practice to effectively and appropriately support workplace soft skill development.

    Task-Based Language Teaching in the Canadian Context

    This course will explore task-based language teaching within the context of competencies and communicative teaching approaches. You will examine task-based language teaching, the integration of language knowledge into tasks, effective assessment of task-based learning, and implementation of task-based learning in real-world classrooms.
