Project Description

The eLearning Toolkit was created by Bow Valley College as part of a two-phase project funded by the Alberta Government.

Phase One of this project produced an applied research report, Virtual Education in ELL: Opportunities, Challenges and Potential, outlining project findings and recommendations for ELL online course development and delivery.

Phase Two of the project created the eLearning Toolkit: Supporting English Language Online. The eLearning Toolkit is informed by research into mitigating strategies for online ELL courses, the Community of Inquiry Framework, eCampus Alberta’s Essential Quality Standards, and the ATESL Adult ESL Curriculum Framework.

The eLearning Toolkit aims to increase ELL instructors’ expertise in planning, facilitating, and evaluating online language learning with a focus on ways to promote accessibility, enhance communication, and foster engagement. It shares a variety of teacher resources and learner activities that help to:

  • increase instructor presence,
  • decrease learners’ isolation, and
  • address three common barriers to online learning: accessibility, communication, and engagement.
