Phase I

Phase I: An Exploration of a CLB Assessment Strategy

Timeframe: April 2013 - March 2014

Phase One of this project was funded by the Alberta Government. The project activities included:

  • Collaborating with Pan-Canadian partners to inform the development plan of the revised On Target! publication to ensure broad applicability of CLB assessment tools.
  • Developing a comprehensive development plan for Phases Two and Three of the project.
  • Developing an online platform to house the assessment tasks and training modules.
Phase II

Phase II: Development of Assessment Tasks at CLB Levels 5 to 9

Timeframe: TBD

The Centre for Excellence in Immigrant and Intercultural Advancement at Bow Valley College is seeking funding for Phase Two development. The proposed activities include:

  • Hiring a Pan-Canadian writing team.
  • Developing assessment tasks that contain marking rubrics that are referenced to the Canadian Language Benchmarks: English as a Second Language for Adults, CLB levels 5 to 9 in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
  • Developing an asynchronous online training module to support ELL practitioners utilization of the assessment tools at CLB levels 5 to 9.
  • Collaborating with a Pan-Canadian advisory committee to inform the development plan of the revised On Target! publication to ensure broad applicability of CLB assessment tools.

Project Description

The aim of this project is to revise and update both volumes of the Bow Valley College publication, On Target!, to align with the 2012 edition of the Canadian Language Benchmarks: English as a Second Language for Adults, levels 1 to 9 in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The project will also develop an asynchronous online training module to support practitioners in administering the assessment tools.

  • Adapting the asynchronous online training module to support ELL practitioners utilization of the assessment tools at CLB levels 1 to 4.
  • Collaborating with a Pan-Canadian advisory committee to inform the development plan of the revised On Target! publication to ensure broad applicability of CLB assessment tools.
