Building upon and supporting the provincial Health Care Aide (HCA) Curriculum while aligning with new regulations and procedures in health care facilities, Safe Choices, Safe Workplaces: Communication Training for Alberta’s Health Care Aide Workers fills the gap between the existing curriculum and the current workplace with regard to health and safety communication. HCAs work under the direct or indirect supervision of licensed health care professionals such as nurses, but in their day-to-day work they encounter potentially dangerous working conditions and their decisions and communication about Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) have potentially huge impacts on themselves, their families, their clients, and coworkers. This training addresses these concerns.
This course will supplement current offerings through an assessment-first and competency-based approach to teaching and learning. The module will include health and safety scenarios and a simulation in which learners will make high-stakes safety decisions in a risk-free environment. In response to the key need of both recognizing and responding to safety hazards, this module focuses on communication skills within an OHS context. This will facilitate better clinical placement outcomes and result in heightened opportunities for employment upon graduation.
Stay tuned for upcoming dates for the pilot and learner information sessions.
