In November 2013, the English Language Learning (ELL) division of the Centre for Excellence in Immigrant & Intercultural Advancement moved from their home in Rocky Mountain Plaza to join the other programs at Bow Valley College’s downtown campus in Calgary. In order to orient all of the learners and staff, a number of initiatives were undertaken to help the college community view this as positive and beneficial change for all stakeholders.
The Welcoming Community initiative supported the transition and orientation of English language learners and staff to Bow Valley College's downtown campus and created a welcoming environment for all stakeholders. It included a large-scale, two-day interactive event that involved the entire college community and included campus tours and the creation of an ELL Learner Handbook. Learners in the Centre leadership program acted as tour guides.
