Refugees come from many different countries and their experiences are diverse. It is important not to make assumptions about refugee learners, but it is also important to recognize common experiences and needs and how these impact the language classroom.

This tool is designed for ELL practitioners working with refugee learners and includes:

  • information on the impact of trauma on learning
  • tips for creating a supportive and safe classroom environment
  • effective teaching strategies and approaches suitable for different levels and groups of learners
ELL Training Network

In response to the needs of the Calgary ELL community, the CEIIA is undertaking a two year project to create professional development workshops to strengthen the instructional skills of ELL instructors and volunteer tutors working with adult refugee learners. The training will provide information, strategies, and inclusive instructional practices to better support refugee learners in the ELL classroom.
