Phases

Research

The research phase uncovered the most common types of communication mismatches through focus groups, an industry advisory committee, a literature review and interviews with stakeholders in workplace settings.  This phase is central to informing the online course development which is currently underway.

Project Description

Workplace Communication for Urban Immigrant Professionals addresses identified intercultural communication (IC) and workplace language needs of immigrants who are seeking to gain employment or are underemployed in a field related to their qualifications, training or experience. This project, which is currently underway, encompasses research, design and delivery of an online professional development course for skilled immigrants working in the energy sector in Calgary.

The goal of the online course will be to assist urban immigrant professionals to communicate effectively in a culturally diverse workplace in order to advance their careers.  The focus will be on communication and soft skills that are most affected by cultural difference.  While an examination of similarities will serve as a starting point or foundation, delving deeper into understanding communication style differences and learning how to moderate these differences will form the majority of this offering.  Areas of focus include: cultural awareness and knowledge, interpersonal communication, organizational awareness, creating visibility and networking, relationship management and communication (internal and external stakeholders) in intercultural settings.
